• Every local government administers the planning scheme that controls land use and development within its boundary.

To find the planning scheme for your area, you first need to know what Council you are in.

You can do this by typing your address into the enquiry page of PlanBuild.

This will tell you what council and locality you are in, plus which scheme and zone you are in.

Once you know this, you can go to the Tasmanian Planning Commission’s website. It is responsible for having all the current schemes available online.

In Tasmania, the legal name for the planning scheme in each local government area is the Tasmanian Planning Scheme – name of council, for example, Tasmanian Planning Scheme – Brighton. This includes what is called the Local Provisions Schedule (LPS).

You can find the current Tasmanian Planning Scheme as it applies to each council area by visiting the Tasmanian Planning Commission’s website. The screen shot below shows what the page looks like. Council websites will also provide links to their other plans and policies.

The LIST has a wide variety of geographic information that is also relevant to planning.

If you need help with interpreting this information, please contact your council. Make sure to check with your council before undertaking new use or development to understand any recent changes to the information available.

Plans and strategies are reviewed and updated regularly. This can result in changes and improvements to the information provided in property reports and strategic plans.
