Key point

Interim planning schemes and older planning schemes are being phased out.

Since 2015, the Tasmanian Government has been reforming the planning system. Soon all councils in Tasmania will be operating under the Tasmanian Planning Scheme (TPS).

Prior to this, all 29 Councils had different schemes developed over different time periods with different rules. This meant that the same development could be treated differently, even if it was in the same zone.

Interim schemes were progressively declared following the completion of the first Regional Land Use Strategies (RLUSs) in 2011. While they benefited from the process of developing the RLUSs, they still had variations. The TPS provides greater consistency for decision making.

All uses and developments that were legally approved under a former planning scheme can continue.

If you are looking for simpler information about current planning than what’s on this page, the Getting Started section tells you how to find the scheme in your area, and some basic information about how they work.
