On behalf of the Minister, the State Planning Office has released a position paper titled – Preventing delays on development assessment timeframes, for a 2 month consultation period.

The Tasmanian Government is committed to delivering an improved planning system. It is actively considering ways to reduce unnecessary delays for decisions on development applications.

The Land Use Planning and Approvals Act 1993 has statutory timeframes for various processes in the assessment and determination of development applications by councils. The position paper outlines the existing legislative framework around these processes and provides guided consultation questions aimed at identifying the issues and exploring potential options to achieve the Tasmanian Government’s second 100 day plan commitment.

Written submissions are invited until 5pm Friday, 8 May 2026 and may be submitted as follows:

Postal address:

State Planning Office
Department of State Growth
GPO Box 536

Email address:

Matters raised during the consultation period will inform further action in response to fulfilling the government’s commitment to improve development assessment timeframes.
