Summary

The State Planning Office and the State Emergency Service (SES) are working on a joint review of the mapping used in the Flood-Prone Areas Hazard Code in the SPPs.

This project will update statewide flood-prone area mapping and include a new Flood-Prone Areas Hazard Code, which integrates with the Coastal Inundation Hazard Code and the building system.

The first stage Tasmanian strategic flood maps completed by SES show the likely area of flooding, depth and speed of water, and danger to people and property. See SES website (www.ses.tas.gov.au) for more information on how to access and use the Tasmanian strategic flood maps, and related information about how SES is supporting flood risk management in Tasmania. These maps will inform preparation of new statewide mapping in a format suitable for use in the planning scheme for application of a revised Flood-Prone Areas Hazard Code.

The current stage by the SES with the State Planning Office (SPO) and the Director of Building Control is developing guidance for flood risk assessment and management to inform amendments to Tasmanian land use planning and building control arrangements.  Consultants Rhelm have been engaged for the Tasmania Land Use Planning and Building Control Policy for Flood Risk Management Project. A series of regional workshops are being held in November 2024, February 2025 and November 2025 to inform the project research and recommendations.

The next stage includes:

  • implementation of recommended changes
  • SES preparation of mapping in a format suitable for use in the planning scheme
  • Director of Building Control preparation of amendments to the Directors Determination in the building system and
  • SPO preparation of SPPs amendments to the Flood-Prone Areas Hazard Code in the planning system.

Updates on next steps will be provided here as project planning progresses.
